Plans and ideas are a dime a dozen. Everyone can come up with plans and ideas. Quite often these are nothing more than wishful thinking. Not that there is anything innately flawed about the plans or ideas – but because, these people don’t go beyond grandstanding.

“I want to exercise.”

Then, they complain about not having the time. But it’s so easy to exercise. All they have to do is to use the stairs, instead of the elevator, to reach their apartment. Alternatively, get off one MRT station or bus-stop earlier and walk the rest of the way home. Once home, they cool down, relax, take a shower and they’re done!

“I have a plan to lose weight.”

Good idea but that never takes off. There are many reasons why one cannot lose weight. Lack of exercise. Too much intake of food and/or the wrong type of food. It could even be one’s genes or a medical situation. Check it out. Identify the root cause and you’re nearer to attaining your goal.

“I have an idea on how to do that.”

Okay. Do it! Do something – anything! Even if you fail, you’re one step closer to success. Every successful person had traveled the path of failure.

And yet, most people – the vast majority, the ninety-nine percent – do not work their plans.  You know such people – people who always “plan” to do something “tomorrow” or “next week” or “next year”.

The root cause is Procrastination.

Procrastination has buried more great plans than bad luck, bad timing, or even incompetence. You see, even if a person is incompetent, if he did something and even if he failed miserably, he would still be one step closer to success than someone who never took that first step.

Here is a little secret.

Procrastination is not a disease – it’s a habit! It is a human condition born out of one’s environment, the company one keeps and one’s learned habits

Here is a second secret.

ALL of us can unlearn debilitating habits as surely as we can learn empowering habits.

You can discard the bad and acquire the good habits.

Moreover, ALL of us are talented beyond what we believe or even dare to believe. All we need to do is to discover what our talents are and exploit them for our benefit, our success.

Rival Opportunities

We’re competitors ourselves and face competition in every sphere of our lives. But how do you view the competition?

Unfortunately, most people view competitors as the “enemy”. If you’re seen fraternizing with someone from a competitor company – having a beer during happy hours, for example – your boss might have a talk with you. You might even be seen as disloyal and viewed with suspicion.

We all know in order to up our game, we need accomplished mentors – people who’ve been there, done that. If you’re fortunate enough to attract someone willing to mentor you – great! Your learning curve might be steep but immensely shortened. That said, we don’t usually get to select our mentors – otherwise, every stock investor will be queuing up outside Warren Buffett’s door, every entrepreneur will be hounding Richard Branson, and so on.

However, why stop with a traditional mentor? Widen your net.

Besides a mentor, one of the next best people to learn from is your competitor. But unlike your mentor, you can select which competitor to shadow.

These are some potential advantages of learning from your competitor:

  1. You gather options on how to tackle challenges and opportunities.

Most businesses have a given modus operando; a methodology they employ almost automatically. For example, when orders increase, when workload increases – management adds new headcount. How many people are willing to review their work processes; to streamline and wring out greater efficiencies? Perhaps your competitor is taking a different approach than merely adding head count.

  1. You add to your knowledge and expertise.

Instead of embracing the “I know best” mantra – which most owners of micro-businesses are guilty of – you could evaluate what the competitor is doing, cherry pick and build a more competitive strategy and action plan.

  1. Your competitor will drive you to excel.

Remember during your school days how you used to gamely compete with your schoolmates. Recall how you pushed them and they, in turn, propelled you to do better.

It’s common wisdom – spewed by many luminaries – that you need to compete with yourself and secure incremental improvement. However, do consider the context in which they give this advice. Their advice is valid, provided, you’re already the top dog.

But consider this example: If your competitor is pulling sales of $1 million and you’re doing only $500,000 – would you rather compete with him or with yourself?

In passing, consider this fictional conversation:

Are you a fast runner?

“No!”

Are you sure?

“Yes!”

You’re very sure you don’t have the potential to run lightning fast?

“Very sure.”

Okay, now imagine a fierce dog is chasing you. Are you a fast runner?

Quite often, and increasingly now, all of us have to work long hours. This could be due to heavy workload, to meet project time targets and a dozen other reasons. Of course, between these spurts of intense activity, one needs to take time out and recharge.

But you need to prepare for the sprints.

You need to intentionally develop your mental faculties and stamina. Only then can you effectively compete with those who have systematically built up their endurance over decades in the business world. Only then can you compete with the best and best them.

How do you build up mental faculties? How do you psyche yourself, discard negative baggage that holds you back and realise your full potential?

Top 10 Strategies for Making Your New Year’s Resolution Stick

2014 is on the horizon, and most of us are scrambling to make up a few New Year’s resolutions that, frankly, we’ll probably forget about in February. Here’s how to create a resolution that actually sticks so you can better yourself this year.

1) Focus on One Resolution

One of the first mistakes people make is planning too many resolutions. The fewer things your brain has to deal with, the better, and you’ll be able to focus all your motivation on one resolution, increasing the chances you’ll succeed.

2) Get Someone to Hold You Accountable

 Having an “accountability buddy” is an old, yet tried-and-true tip for sticking to your resolutions. Tell your goals to a few close family and friends who will be honest with you and keep you on the right track. Heck, if you’re having trouble thinking of a good resolution, those buddies can actually help you pick one, too (since they know you best, faults and all). Don’t go too overboard, though. Remember, sometimes sharing with too many people can hinder your accomplishments.

3) Set Ultra-Specific Goals

New Year’s resolutions are often big and general, making them hard to attain. The more specific you can be, the easier it will be to reach that goal. “Lose weight” or “get in shape” is a bad resolution; “Lose 15 pounds by March” is a good one. Setting multiple specific goals throughout the year is good, too. That way, you always have something attainable to focus on that doesn’t seem far off.

4) Piggyback Your Resolution with Existing Habits

If your resolution involves building small habits—like, say, flossing every day or taking daily vitamins—you can “piggyback” these habits with other, already-established ones. Stick your dental floss in your shower and floss during your shower, or put your vitamin jar inside your kitchen cupboard so you always remember to take them when you eat breakfast. The easier you can form the habit, the more likely it is to stick.

5) Give Yourself a Trial Run

Not every resolution is perfect out of the gate, so don’t hold yourself to a poorly-formed goal if it just won’t work. Give yourself a 30-day trial run to work out the kinks, where you can let yourself stumble a bit and tweak your goals to something better suited for success. Keep in mind that not all habits are formed in 21 days, as conventional wisdom says, so even after the trial run, give yourself time to sink into the habit before you start admitting defeat.

6)Trick Your Mind

Resolutions are hard to keep without a sense of accomplishment. Having specific, gradual goals can help, but another trick is to play some mind games with yourself.even if you know you’re using it on yourself. Focus on anything that makes you feel like you’re succeeding. If you’re trying to lose weight, eating from smaller plates will make you “feel” fuller, even if you’re eating the same amount of food, for example. Do whatever you need to do to trick your mind and you’ll be well on your way to success.

7)Visualize the End Result

As writer Rod Ebrahimi says, “focus on the carrot, not the stick”. If you’re having trouble staying motivated, focus on what you’ll get from your end goal—whether that’s feeling better at a lower weight, being able to impress your friends with your new guitar skills, or just being able to breathe now that you’ve quit smoking. Staying positive seems like common sense, but it can be hard when you’re in the middle of a big plateau.

8) Closely Measure Your Progress

If you’ve created specific goals, then getting positive reinforcement should be easy. Every time your each one of those goals—even if it’s just a daily goal—mark it off on a checklist or calendar.

9)Remind Yourself of Your Goals Every Day

If you’re having trouble keeping your goals at the forefront of your mind, you can use one of any number of tricks to constantly remind yourself (besides tracking your progress). Set an alarm on your phone with a message of why you’re doing this, record yourself on a webcam every day, or use dry erase markers to write your goals on your bathroom mirror.
