When He Was Born, His Parents Knew ~He Was Special~

Posted by on Apr 30, 2015 in Inspirational Stories | 0 comments

However, when they learned about the disabilities Patrick has at birth, they were devastated.

Patrick Hughes is a young man at Univ. of Louisville who was born blind and crippled. He was born without functioning eyes. He is diagnosed with Anophthalmia, a medical term for the absence of one or both eyes. Both the globe (human eye) and the ocular tissue are missing from the orbit.

He is also diagnosed with Hip dysplasia, a congenital or developmental deformation or misalignment of the hip joint. He cannot fully straighten out his arms and his legs, making him unable to walk. In addition, to correct scoliosis, Patrick’s spine needs to be surgically attached with two steel rods.

Disabled Is Not Unabled

However, despite with all his disabilities, he never gives up and never let the obstacles stand in the way of achieving his dreams. He found ways to be an inspiration to us all. When Patrick Henry was asked to describe his disabilities, he replied that “He is not disabilities at all, but more abilities. This amazing guy has taught the world that “Disabled is Not Unabled“. He said: “God made me blind and unable to walk. Big deal! He gave me the musical talents I have, and the great opportunity to meet new people.”

Extraordinary Abilities

Patrick Henry showed extraordinary abilities at a very early age despite his physical challenges. He is an amazing pianist. By his second birthday, the toddler could play songs on the piano after hearing them only once. He was playing request, e.g. “You are my Sunshine.”

His father, Patrick John Hughes sees the talent in him in playing piano, decided that instead of playing baseball, he is going to play music together with Patrick Henry. He was excited about it and wants to see how far they can run with this.

Patrick Henry, despite his physical challenges, now plays the piano beautifully as well as “marches” in the Louisville marching band, for five seasons with help from his father, Patrick John Hughes.

He is not only a university student, but also plays a wide array of musical instruments, is an accomplished singer, and an exuberant trumpet player in the University of Louisville School of Music Marching and Pep Band.

He has been featured on ESPN, ABC-TV, Oprah, CBS-TV, The Ellen Show, Extreme Make Over Home Edition, and many, many others.

This truly Amazing, Inspiration & Heart-warming story of Perseverance is something we can all learn from. And how Patrick`s parents focused on their son`s abilities to help him fulfilled his dreams despite his disabilities.

Ask yourself these questions:

–       Are your obstacles real or imagined?

–       Are you willing to step out of your comfort zone?

–       Are you always giving excuses that you can’t accomplish your dreams?

Just like Patrick, you can accomplish anything you put your mind to. There is no excuse for you to avoid following your dreams and accomplishing them.

His Parents Abandoned Him When They Saw What He Looked Like

30-year-old Jono Lancaster was born with a rare genetic disorder, Treacher Collins syndrome. He was abandoned by his parents when they saw what he looked like. Treacher Collins syndrome affects facial bone and tissue development. It is a rare condition and effect just one in 50,000 people which prevents the skull, cheek and jawbones from developing properly. Problems range in severity from mild to very severe. In most cases, the child’s intelligence is normal.

His Amazing Story will move you.

Jono Lancaster faced many difficult situations in his life. Though abandoned and bullied, he accepts himself for who he is and what he looks like and decides to spend his life making others feel comfortable in their own skin and raising awareness. Now, he is an inspiration and hope for a lot of children and their families.

He believes that he is born with a purpose in life to accomplish a wonderful task in this world.

He travels world-wide to educate the public about the disorder. He has flown to Australia and New Zealand to meet with children who share the same condition, to give them inspiration and show them what they can achieve in life, including two-year-old Zackary Walton.

Mother Sarah Walton, mother of Zachary, says the 30-year-old of West Yorkshire has left a huge impact on her family.

‘It gives me hope that my son can grow up to be a happy man just like Jono Lancaster.’

Hi Friends

In about a few days time, year 2011 will be over and we will be welcoming year 2012. Have you ever looked back in time and ask yourself what have you achieved so far? You might be thinking that time really flies and while you are so busy with your daily life that you almost forgot what you have done. Or you might just be thinking about what have you achieved for the past one year? Have you been achieving what you want out of your life or have you been procrastinating and postponing most of your plans? Well, whatever that have happened or not happened, they are already in the past. What is going to happen in the future is what are you going to do about NOW!

It’s been more than 1 year after I have battled kidney cancer. I was lucky. I lived but not some of them of the patients. One of the biggest takeaway for me is the importance of TIME. That’s all we have to live the life that we have always wanted.

In this Blog, I wished to share with you how I lived my life the way I wanted a year after cancer. My intention is to inspire you to live the life that you wanted, not what others expect of you.

I love my job. I really do. 2 days after I was diagnosed with cancer, my life goes on. Some may be thinking that I am crazy but I was determined to live life as normal as possible. I run my trainings as usual, launched my 1st book titled ‘Do You Have What IT Takes To Be BOSS?’ and was interviewed by The Straits Times for having the intention of donating ALL sales proceeds of the books to The Straits Times School Pocket Fund.

A month after a massive surgery to remove my tumour, I was back to work even though I was not supposed to. I simply missed my life. My NLP Trainings carried on and I successfully launched 2 brands: Mind Kinesis NLP Academy (which specialised in NLP Training) and Mind Kinesis Value Investing Academy, which has the FIRST Singapore Value Investing Programme that is recommended by Mary Buffett, the Internationally Acclaimed Author & Speaker of the International Best Sellers ‘Buffettology’, ‘Tao of Warren Buffett’, ‘The Management Secrets of Warren Buffett’ and my company was featured in The ShareInvestment Magazine. We are now collaborating with huge partners in Singapore to launch some of the biggest events in Asia in 2012 as well as 2 new product launches. It will be an exciting new year!

The journey to Mastery does not have a destination. It’s an Ultra-Ironman Race where we should never stop learning. That’s how we grow and get better each year, so that we in turn, we can help others. Despite the busy schedule, I am happy to have successfully completed 4 Certification Trainings this year in which one took place in Brighton, United Kingdom where I have met new friends from all parts of the world. One of my Mexican friend, Agustin, even flew from Mexico to take part in my Value Investing Programme (VIP). It was awesome seeing him. On average, I sticked to my plan of reading at least 2 personal development articles per day with posting of some on my company’s Fanpage at NLP Singapore (www.facebook.com/nlpinsingapore) and Value Investing Academy (www.facebook.com/valueinvestingacademy). In total, I would have read more than 700 articles in a year.

This is the most important of all. However, most of us have ignored it and keep postponing exercising. I want to jog but I do not like jogging. So what I did was to tag a worthwhile purpose to it – Run with a Purpose. The most memorable run I had was the ‘Run for Hope’ 10km run where I did a few months back and I bumped onto Dr William Tan, one of my role model in terms of fighting spirit. In case you do not know who Dr William Tan is, just imagine a man on a wheel chair that does his tons of marathons not only on land but on ice, yes, on ice in Antartica. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with Cancer and he is till undergoing treatment. The doctor has advised him to not do his marathon anymore. Guess what he did. He switched to Table Tennis. He epitomised the Human Spirit.

I also picked up one sport in which I wanted to do for a long time – Muay Thai. I loved Martial Arts since I was a kid and I have done Shorinji Kempo, Judo & Nam Wah Pai (Black Black 1st Dan). Great to start learning to kick butts or my butts being kicked :)

My goal each year was to run a charity event for my preferred organization with a cause. One of the memorable one was that I organized a event for children who are beneficiaries of the Children Cancer Foundation. It was a simple event where we gather children who have survived cancer to play some games with scientific toys. Their parents came along and we had great fun. What’s meaningful about this event is that the parents appreciate my intention and they said ‘Thanks!”. Nothing is more heart-warming than that. For 2012, one of the organization that I target to help is Tan Tock Seng Hospice Care Centre. This is an organization where it is helping patients with a life span of not more than 12 months. It was also the same organization that has helped my mum when she was diagnosed with terminal stage lung cancer and was given 3 months to live. I was too poor then to give back after graduating from NUS with a huge debt years back, but now I could. It’s time to pay it forward!

Other than doing things for a social purpose, I spent time with my friends as well. In case you do not know, most of my friends are my trainees and my trainees are my friends. This may be one of the reason why people love to attend my NLP Trainings or Value Investing Trainings. I can take their cause seriously and personally. Well, I intentionally leave this segment to the last. No matter how much fortune I have made, how others perceived me as successful or how much glory that I had, are these really important?

I was lying on my death bed more than a year ago, and guess what comes to my mind? I have always dreamt of having  happy family with 2 children. To me, this will complete my life. Unfortunately, after I had my 1st child and wanted to have a 2nd one, I was diagnosed with Kidney Cancer. My world collapsed. Nothing appears to matters anymore other than just spending a moment more with my family. My dream no longer can be fulfilled ……………….

It means more than a year now, and you know what? As I am typing this Blog on Christmas Day, I just had my 2nd little girl yesterday wher she was born on the eve of Christmas. A great Christmas Gift indeed!

If you are reading this Blog now, let me share with you a of my favorite quote by Dr Randy Paush who passed away because of terminal stage pancreatic cancer:

“Live your life properly, and the dreams will come to you” ~ Dr Randy Paush, ‘The Last Lecture’.

How to Become More Effective in Your Coaching Consulting and Training Business

By Graham Constantine

5 Practical Skills To Get More Influential

Well, of all the places to discover something new, something that works, sitting in the entrance to the Rope Tackle building in Shoreham about to make a sales visit to a big potential new Customer. Well, “he’s probably not really that big!”, I say to myself, but his reputation is that he learns by doing and has no time for “personal development stuff”. His favourite sayings are “I want to be effective”, and “I learn by doing”. I feel that my stomach is a little tense and my palms are a little hot and moist. I wonder, what can I do to influence him to become a customer…..

Well, maybe these 5 practical skills may help :

Skill 1.Be Likeable and Helpful To People That You Meet To Earn The Right To Influence Them.

Skill 2.Use The Language And Behaviour Of Influence To Create An Agreement Frame !

Skill 3.Make A Great Sales Presentation.

Skill 4.Build a pathway to Yes and Lead Your Prospects to make really great decisions.

Skill 5.Frame Objections as Resources and Negotiate to close more Win-Win Agreements.

So, as I’m waiting in the reception area I’m spinning the feeling of being in a wanton buying state from the top of my head to the tip of my toes. Sounds a bit wierd I know, but it works, I begin to relax and prepare for our discussion.

Step 1 : Be Likable and Helpful !

“Few people would be surprised to learn that, as a rule, we most prefer to say yes to the requests of someone we know and like.” Robert B Cialdini, Ph.D.

We sit down on a low leather sofa and I smile, shake hands and say “So, I’m curious, how’s business ?”

He tells me “Business is going really well. We’re really busy.”

As our conversation progresses, nod my head gently and gesture to demonstrate that I understand what he’s saying. Turns out that he’s had a bad experience with Steve, at least I think that’s his name, someone else who came in to talk to him about NLP…..

“Let’s get straight to the point. Does NLP work?” he asks “the other bloke told me I think

in pictures and I thought about it over the weekend and I actually think in words.” He says.

Step 2 : Create an Agreement Frame.

“The thing that makes NLP work go so quickly is that we make very practical decisions about what order we do things in…..”Gather information!…Evolve system…Solidify change”” Richard Bandler and John Grinder

So I begin from a point of agreement and continue to ask questions to find out what we agree on and playback all the things that we do agree on.

“Do you want to know how NLP works?”

“Yes” he replies.

“Well, I’m sure that you do think……

and when you think of the seafront at Shoreham, how do you think?” I say

“in pictures”, he responds

and when you think of writing a proposal how do you think?

“in words……”

and sometimes you think in feelings, sometimes you think in sounds ….. depends on what you’re doing…….

and I’m curious, have thought what you can do with NLP …..”

Step 3 : Make A Great Sales Presentation.

When they think people tend to use their senses. So when you do your sales presentation, you can use a mixture of seeing, hearing and feeling words to match the way that your prospect thinks.

“because, we always ask the participants in our workshops, why do you want to learn to use NLP to influence people ….. Here are some of the answers that we get:

Improve Negotiation Skills – Hit More Objectives

Make Initial Connection – Rapid Rapport

Use Language To Encourage Response

Match Customer’s State and Lead to Where You Want To Go

Close and Say Yes

Yes By Face to Face, Email and Phone”

“When you do the right thing for the right reason you will enjoy influencing and persuading more, take the pressure off and you will be more successful…..

so, can you see yourself using some of these skills, hear the different responses that you get, how you vary your voice tone and tempo, and influence more people….. and get the response that you want…..”

Step 4 : Lead Your Prospects To Make Really Great Decisions.

Your prospect has made decisions before, so you can help him or her to make another great decision.

“easily, so are you interested to……learn more……

as I’m sure that you’ve made good decisions before…….

so what more can I tell you and show you……..”

Step 5 : Negotiate To Close More Win-Win Agreements !

As you began from a point of agreement the amount of conflict will be very low, so you will reduce the amount of negotiating that you need to do.

“…..so can you see yourself on an NLP workshop and hear the sound of laughter…..”

“Yes”. He said. Let’s go……

You too can use these five steps to influence more people.

Live an amazing life, succeed in your small business.
